A 3D mobile mapping system (3D MMS) enables the researchers in the field of
Geographical Information Systems to develop 3D models of the cities
automatically. The system consists of a 3D high resolution scanner which can
scan over a diameter of 100 m and ahigh resolution video camera which can
capture the 360 degrees view of the surroundings by the help of a servo
controller which rotates the scanner and the video camera at required angles.
The 3D MMS provides coordinate based 360 degrees panoramic views which can be
navigated interactively using a mouse. It is also possible to measure distances
and to add new structures on the 3D model obtained by the 3DMMS. These models
are implemented in GIS systems which can be used for planning, management and
navigation of the geographical places in a 3D environment.
